Distracted drivers are on the rise of causing auto accidents and are extremely dangerous. In 2019 distracted drivers alone claimed 3,142 lives in the U.S. Distracted drivers can be several different things, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, adjusting the stereo, entertainment, or navigation system. It’s anything that takes your attention away from safe driving. Any one of these distractions could be the cause of an auto accident.
Texting is an alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that is equivalent to driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
Teens’ inexperience behind the wheel makes them more susceptible to being distracted while behind the wheel. One in three teens who text say they have done so while behind the wheel.
